Murat Akova is the Professor of Medicine in the Infectious Diseases Department at Hacettepe University School of Medicine in Ankara, Türkiye. A graduate of Istanbul University, he completed his residency training in internal medicine and infectious diseases at Hacettepe University School of Medicine. His postgraduate studies included in the Department of Medical Microbiology in London Hospital Medical College, London, UK where he obtained a Diploma in Clinical Microbiology, and the Center for Adaptive Resistance and Microbiology at Tufts University School of Medicine, Boston, USA. Dr. Akova served in the executive committees of the International Antimicrobial Treatment Group of the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC), the European Society of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases (ESCMID) and the International Immunocompromised Host Society (ICHS). He is the past president of ESCMID (2014-2016) and the immediate past president of ICHS (2022-2024). Regarding the local societies in Türkiye, he is one of the founding members and past president of the Turkish Clinical Research Association and the current president of the Turkish Febrile Neutropenia Society. He is a member of the Science Academy of Türkiye.
Dr. Akova’s scientific research interests include infections in immunocompromised host, antimicrobial resistance in gram-negative bacteria, clinical drug and vaccine trials, and medical education.
