Michael S. Calderwood, MD, MPH is the Chief Quality Officer at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center. His responsibilities include management and oversight of the integration of safety, quality, patient experience and value/process improvement activities; along with oversight of quality assurance and regulatory compliance. In addition, he works closely with other Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center chief officers to identify organizational quality, safety, patient experience and value opportunities annually; and to develop policies, programs, metrics, reporting and accountability to aggressively implement improvement.
Calderwood joined Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center in 2016, and is an Associate Professor of Medicine at the Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth. He is an active physician in the Section of Infectious Disease and International Health, and is board certified in internal medicine and infectious disease. Prior to his current leadership role, he served as Regional Hospital Epidemiologist for the Dartmouth Health system, as the Medical Co-director of the Collaborative Healthcare-associated Infection Prevention team, and as one of the leaders of the Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center Comprehensive Antimicrobial Program.
Calderwood earned a bachelor's degree in biology from Harvard University, followed by a medical degree from the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine, Chicago, Illinois. He completed his residency in internal medicine at Brigham and Women's Hospital, and a fellowship in infectious diseases in the combined Brigham and Women's Hospital/Massachusetts General Hospital program. He also holds a master of public health degree from the Harvard School of Public Health.
