Dr. Campbell, MD, MPH, is a Medical Officer and Team Lead for the Severe Illness and Multisystem Inflammatory Syndrome Team in the Coronavirus and Other Respiratory Viruses Division at the CDC. Dr. Campbell completed her medical degree at Vanderbilt University. She trained in pediatrics and pediatric infectious diseases, and completed an MPH, at the University of Washington/Seattle Children's. Dr. Campbell first worked at CDC as an Epidemic Intelligence Service Officer, followed by several years in Seattle studying respiratory viruses in the immunocompromised host before rejoining CDC in the Influenza Division, focusing on studies of antiviral and vaccine effectiveness, pandemic preparedness, and clinical guidance related to treatment and prevention of seasonal and novel influenza viruses. In 2020, she became actively involved in CDC’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic, and she now focuses on the epidemiology, prevention, treatment, and outcomes of severe illness and complications of respiratory virus infections. Her team leads investigations related to effectiveness of COVID-19 vaccination against COVID-19 pediatric hospitalizations and MIS-C, surveillance for multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C), and work related to prevention of severe respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) in infants. She is an Affiliate Investigator at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center, Adjunct Associate Professor of Pediatrics at Emory University School of Medicine, and has a Professional Staff appointment at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta where she attends on the ID service and works as a PRN pediatric hospitalist.
