Associate Director, Clinical Microbiology
University of Virginia Health
Dr. Emily A. Snavely is the Associate Director of Clinical Microbiology at the University of Virginia Health System. She earned her B.A. in Biology from Dartmouth College and her Ph.D. in Molecular Genetics and Microbiology from Duke University. Her career began with an APHL-CDC Antimicrobial Resistance Fellowship at the Wadsworth Center, where she was instrumental in implementing whole-genome sequencing of antibiotic-resistant organisms to assist with outbreak investigations.
Dr. Snavely then completed a fellowship in Clinical and Public Health Microbiology at the University of Utah. At both the Wadsworth Center and ARUP Laboratories, she utilized next-generation sequencing (NGS) to investigate potential outbreaks of antimicrobial-resistant organisms in various healthcare settings. She has played a key role in developing bioinformatic pipelines and validating NGS workflows in CLIA-accredited clinical laboratories. Board-certified by the American Board of Medical Microbiology, Dr. Snavely is involved in the Virginia Pathogen Genomic Centers of Excellence, a CDC-funded initiative enhancing public health responses to infectious diseases.
Looking ahead, she is particularly interested in improving the clarity and impact of NGS laboratory reports for providers, epidemiologists, and public health officials, and in advancing the integration of NGS technologies into routine clinical and public health practice.
