Gail J. Demmler-Harrison, MD
Dr Demmler Harrison’s current position is Professor, Department of Pediatrics, Division of Infectious Diseases, Baylor College of Medicine and Attending Physician, Infectious Diseases Service and CMV Congenital Infections Clinic, Texas Children’s Hospital, Houston Texas.
Dr. Demmler-Harrison has over 40 years experience as a pediatric infectious diseases physician, and as an expert in viral diseases of children. For over 25 years, she was Director of the Diagnostic Virology Laboratory at Texas Children’s Hospital, during which time she helped validate numerous diagnostic tests for viral infections in children, and navigated several viral pandemics. Her particular area of longterm interest has been congential infections, especially congenital cytomegalovirus or CMV infection. Her research focuses on medically important viral infections of the fetus, newborn, infant, and child, especially CMV. She has conducted a prospective multidisciplinary study of the long-term effects of congenital CMV infection on growth, development, vision, and hearing into adulthood, and the possible benefits of fetal and neonatal antiviral therapy for this condition. She is currently helping to develop new diagnostic tests for congenital CMV diagnosis and newborn screening, and participates in multicenter clinical trials. Dr. Demmler-Harrison also sees patients with congenital CMV and other congenital infections in her CMV Clinic. She is a staunch advocate for CMV awareness and CMV education in the medical community and for the public.
Dr Demmler-Harrision is a member of Infectious Diseases Society of America (IDSA), Pediatric Infectious Diseases Society of America (PIDS), American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), The Society for Pediatric Research (SPR), and the American Pediatric Society (APS), and she has served on numerous national committees, as well as holding leadership positions as Secretary-Treasurer and President of The Society for Pediatric Research, and Pediatric Academic Societies Program Chair. She has received numerous awards for her research and clinical activities, she is a frequent speaker at scientific meetings and on line Webinars and videos, she is the author of hundreds of scientific abstracts and publications, book chapters, and other scholarly works, and is a co-editor of Feigin & Cherry’s Textbook of Pediatric Infectious Diseases, a major textbook in pediatric infectious diseases, now in production of its ninth edition.
