Prof. Jaffar A. Al-Tawfiq
Prof. Al-Tawfiq is a distinguished physician specializing in infectious diseases and serving as the Director of Prevention and Control of Infection and Accreditation at Johns Hopkins Aramco Healthcare (JHAH) in Dhahran, Saudi Arabia. He completed his Internal Medicine residency and Infectious Diseases fellowship at Indiana University School of Medicine. He also holds a diploma in Tropical Medicine and Hygiene from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine and is an Improvement Advisor from the Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI).
Dr. Al-Tawfiq has made significant contributions to healthcare epidemiology, infection prevention, and antimicrobial stewardship. Dr. Al-Tawfiq played a crucial role in managing the Middle East Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus (MERS-CoV) since its emergence in 2012 and was part of the Saudi delegation to South Korea in 2015 to control a MERS-CoV outbreak. During the COVID-19 pandemic, his contributions were equally significant. He was instrumental in Saudi Arabia's response, engaging in policy development, epidemiological investigations, and implementing preventive measures. Dr. Al-Tawfiq collaborated closely with the Saudi CDC and Ministry of Health, serving on expert committees and formulating national guidelines for COVID-19 management, thereby shaping the country's public health strategies.
Dr. Al-Tawfiq is a member of the Society for Healthcare Epidemiology of America (SHEA), the Infectious Diseases Society of America, and the American College of Physicians. He holds honorary fellowships from the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh and Ireland and serves on the executive committee of the International Society for Infectious Diseases. His leadership and dedication to mass gathering medicine and infectious diseases have been recognized with numerous awards, such as the SHEA International Award (2019) and the Excellence in Patient Care Award from the Royal College of Physicians of London (2018). His extensive publication record underscores his commitment to advancing the understanding and management of infectious diseases, both nationally and internationally. Dr. Al-Tawfiq also serves as an associate editor and a member of editorial boards for several international journals, further contributing to the field's scholarly and practical advancements.
