Dr. Charles Edmiston is Emeritus Professor of Surgery, Division of Vascular Surgery, Medical College of Wisconsin in Milwaukee, Wisconsin & Adjunct Professor, Vanderbilt University School of Medicine, Nashville, Tennessee. He completed his doctorate at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee, joining the Surgical faculty in Milwaukee in 1984 to develop a surgical infectious disease research program.
At MCW Dr. Edmiston was Director and Professor, Surgical Microbiology and Hospital Epidemiology Research Laboratory, Department of Surgery, Medical College of Wisconsin (1984-2018). Dr. Edmiston was the Hospital Epidemiologist, Froedtert Hospital, Medical College of Wisconsin (1995-2016) and SSI Expert Liaison, Surgical Champion, State of Wisconsin Division of Public Health (2014-2020).
Dr, Edmiston is a Fellow of the Infectious Disease Society of American, Association of Practitioners in Infection control and Epidemiology, Surgical Infection Society and Society for Healthcare Epidemiology of America.. He is Board credentialed in both Infection Control (CIC-CBIC) and as a Specialist in Clinical Microbiology (SM-ASCP).
For 15 years has served as a consultant to the Food & Drug Administration (FDA) as an expert on the infection control implications of implantable biomedical devices, including as Chairman of the General Hospital & Personal Use Device Panel of the Medical Devices Committee of the Food and Drug Administration.
Dr. Edmiston served as Surgical Infection Society liaison (SIS) to the Hospital Infection Control Practice Advisory Committee (HICPAC) of the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention (1990-1992).
He ia a Current member of 2 Editorial Boards: Infection Control and Hospital Epidemiology and Surgical Infections - past board member of Surgery, American Journal of Infection Control and JAMA Surgery
Dr. Edmiston's major research interest includes intravascular device-related infections, nosocomial risks in the operating room environment; biomedical-device associated infections; impact of selected risk factors for surgical site infections, perioperative antibiotic prophylaxis, surface disinfection, innovative strategies for reducing the risk of SSIs, molecular epidemiology of surgical site infections, perioperative antisepsis, and perioperative antimicrobial prophylaxis in obese patient populations.
He is the author of over 350 published peer-reviewed publications including book chapters, editorials reviews, manuals and abstracts. Dr. Edmiston has delivered over 500 National and International invited lectures/workshops on such topics as: Epidemiology and pathogenesis of surgical site infections, Surface disinfection in the acute care environment, Nosocomial risks in the operating room environment, Pathogenesis of device-related infections, Molecular epidemiology of surgical site infections, Impact of patient risk factor on SSIs, Perioperative antimicrobial prophylaxis, Development of implantable antimicrobial devices, Evidence-based interventions to reduce the risk of surgical site infections, and the Economic impact of evidence-based interventional strategies to reduce the risk of surgical site infections.
