Dr. Melanie Thompson has continuously cared for persons living with HIV since 1982. As Principal Investigator of the AIDS Research Consortium of Atlanta beginning in 1988, she conducted over 400 studies in the areas of HIV treatment, prevention, diagnostics and epidemiology, as well as HCV and STI diagnostics and treatment. She currently serves as co-chair of the HIVMA/IDSA HIV Primary Care Guidance and sits on the HHS Antiretroviral Guidelines panel and the International Antiviral Society-USA Antiretroviral Guidelines panel. She is Past Chair of the HIV Medicine Association (HIVMA) and serves on its Ryan White Medical Providers Steering Committee, Leadership Development Committee, and Ending the HIV Epidemic Working Group. She currently chairs the Comprehensive Planning Committee of the Metro Atlanta HIV Planning Council (Ryan White Part A). She was Executive Editor of the Strategy to End AIDS in Fulton County, published in 2017 by the Fulton County Task Force on HIV/AIDS. Her passion is to contribute to the end of the domestic HIV epidemic, especially in the South, by centering equity across treatment, prevention, policy, and the everpresent fight against structural racism, stigma, and discrimination.
