US Pacific Regional TB Medical Officer

Since 2010, CAPT Richard Brostrom has served as the CDC TB Medical Officer for Hawaii and the US Pacific Islands. He has worked to address the impact of diabetes on tuberculosis case outcomes for the US Pacific Islands and leads consults for TB cases across the Region. His is recognized as a regional expert for managing drug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR TB), including the current outbreaks of MDR TB among Chuukese individuals residing in Guam and Kansas. He has led 5 active case finding missions in the Marshall Islands and in Chuuk providing intensive screening and treatment for 45,000 high-risk persons for TB, latent TB, Leprosy, and Diabetes.
He sits on two WPRO Regional TB Advisory committees and has been a key responder for infectious disease outbreaks and disasters across the Pacific Region, including COVID-19 (11 regional deployments), measles, dengue (x2), and Zika (x2) and typhoons (x2).
Prior to working at CDC, Dr Brostrom served as the Public Health Medical Director for the US Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands (CNMI), a position he held for 10 years.
Dr Brostrom considers himself very fortunate to be associated with CDC and with Public Health Teams in the Pacific Region for the past 29 years.
