I am an academic orthopaedic-surgeon scientist who specializes in the complex reconstruction of the lower extremity in adults for over a decade. Over 60% of my practice consists of repeat joint replacements, primarily for infection. I am in the top 1% of all orthopaedic researchers (authored over 200 manuscripts, hold over 20 patents, and founded 4 companies). I am a member of the Musculoskeletal Infection Society, American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS), American Orthopaedic Association, and the Knee Society. I am a sitting member of the AAOS Committee for Biologics, Devices, and Technologies. My group created an assay that identified small colony variants as a major component of Staphylococcal biofilms. Small colony variants are a bacterial population that create many of the deficiencies in the diagnosis of infected joint replacements, specifically regarding the overreliance on neutrophils for diagnosis and host immunosuppression. My team believes the innate immune system is critical to identifying biofim-associated latent infection.
