Andrés Maldonado, PhD, is Global Medical Director for Early Development and Pipeline at ViiV Healthcare. His career in infectiology is driven by the fight against diseases affecting vulnerable populations in geographic areas with limited resources, and he advocates for elevating the voice of the patient and using it as the guiding force in the fight against the spreading of infectious diseases.
After an academic career as a scientist and lecturer, Dr Maldonado joined GSK, where he contributed to pediatric and adult vaccines and market access for low- and middle-income markets before transitioning to adult immunization and managing interactions between vaccine strategists, external experts, key opinion leaders, and patient advocacy groups. Since 2020, he has been part of ViiV Healthcare, a company of GSK that is 100% focused on the fight against HIV and AIDS and addressing the needs of people living with HIV or who could benefit from PrEP.
Beyond his work in HIV and infectiology, Dr Maldonado supports initiatives around inclusion and diversity, with a special focus on the LGBTQIA+ community. In 2018, he co-founded SPECTRUM, an employee resource group of GSK advocating for the rights of the LGBTQIA+ community within GSK. Because of his commitment to DEI and his work on infectious diseases, Dr Maldonado was included in the 2023 cohort of Belgium’s 40under40, which recognizes the next generation of Belgium’s societal leaders.
Dr Maldonado holds a PhD degree in Bioengineering from the KU Leuven, a Masters in Life Sciences from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, and a Bioscience Engineering degree from the University of La Sabana in Colombia. Originally from Bogotá, Colombia, he resides in Belgium, where he enjoys outdoor activities, exploring his creative side in the kitchen, and spending time with his family. He speaks Spanish, English, French, and Dutch, with a Latino punch!
