Dr. Matthews grew up in Michigan and attended the University of Michigan as an undergraduate, majoring in Chemistry and Cellular & Molecular Biology. After graduating, he attended the University of Washington for both MD and PhD degrees, obtaining his PhD in the Department of Pharmacology. He then completed both a residency in Pediatrics and fellowship in Pediatric Gastroenterology at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP). Following completion of his fellowship he stayed at CHOP and the University of Pennsylvania as faculty in the Department of Pediatrics, attending on the Gastroenterology service at CHOP and running a laboratory using zebrafish to model hepatobiliary diseases. He left CHOP and joined Merck in early clinical development, where he worked on early clinical trials for compounds treating several infectious disorders, including C diff, HCV and HIV. After several years, he transitioned to late stage clinical development, where he now works on clinical programs for both treatment and prevention of HIV.
