My name is Rachel Medernach, M.D., and I am currently an adult infectious diseases fellow physician at Northwestern University in Chicago, Illinois. I obtained my Bachelor of Science in Psychology at Loyola University Chicago. I completed medical school at Loyola University Chicago's Stritch School of Medicine, followed by residency in internal medicine-pediatrics at Rush University in Chicago, Illinois. During residency, I developed an interest in antimicrobial resistance and completed several research projects focused on ESBL infections in the pediatric population, generating interest in a career in infectious diseases. Throughout my fellowship, I have had the opportunity to work on several research projects in the Hauser Laboratory at Northwestern. I am currently studying mechanisms of antimicrobial resistance in immunocompromsied hosts, specifically lung transplant recipients. Additionally, I am studying mechanaims by which Pseudomonas aeruginosa populations develop anitmicrobial resistance and additional virulence factors.
