Barbara W. Trautner, MD, PhD is an infectious diseases clinician-investigator at Baylor College of Medicine and the Michael E. DeBakey Veterans Affairs Medical Center, affiliated with the Center for Innovations in Quality, Effectiveness, and Safety (IQuESt). Her primary research interest is urinary tract infection (UTI) and the related condition of asymptomatic bacteriuria (ASB). Dr. Trautner’s frustration with seeing her patients’ bladder flora become more resistant after courses of unnecessary antibiotics for ASB led to two productive areas of investigation: (1) antibiotic-sparing strategies for prevention and management of UTI, including bacteriophage, and (2) implementation of antibiotic stewardship guidelines, particularly for UTI and ASB. She is currently co-chair of the Infectious Diseases Society of America UTI guidelines committee. At the Houston VA she is the Director of Clinical Research.
