Dr. Stampfer is an Assistant Professor of Medicine in the Division of Infectious Diseases at Emory University School of Medicine. He graduated from Tufts University School of Medicine with an MD/PhD degree in 2015, with his doctoral work focusing on structural studies of herpesvirus proteins involved in viral entry. He completed his internal medicine residency and infectious diseases fellowship at Emory in 2021 through the ABIM research pathway. His research interests combine his passions for viruses and protein structure. To this end, he completed a T32-funded Vaccinology fellowship in 2022 and, in 2024, received a K08 grant to use rational antigen design to create broadly-active coronavirus vaccines against the current and future pandemics. Sam loves evaluating mechanisms of viral entry and, over the past 19 years, has studied herpesviruses, coronaviruses, HIV, poxviruses, ebolavirus, and hepatitis C virus. He also works on the inpatient ID consult service at Emory University Hospital, which provides a nice break from the lab and continuous opportunities to think of new projects ahead.
