Ryan graduated with his Doctor of Pharmacy degree, with honors, from Ferris State University in 2008. After graduation, Ryan worked at a community pharmacy for a short period of time, before accepting a position as Clinical Pharmacist at St. Mary's of Michigan Hospital (Saginaw, MI) in 2008. From 2009 to 2014, he developed and led the Antimicrobial Stewardship Program (ASP) at St. Mary's of Michigan Hospital. Since 2015, he has practiced as a Clinical Pharmacist Specialist in Infectious Diseases at the John D. Dingell VA Medical Center (JDD VAMC) in Detroit, Michigan and has served as ASP Committee Co-Chair and program manager. He worked as the pharmacist-lead for the JDD VAMC Hepatitis C treatment program from 2015-2018. He co-created and cultivated the ASP at JDD VAMC, implementing vast inpatient ASP services, along with outpatient and nursing home ASP services, which eventually led to the hospital being designated as an “ASP Center of Excellence” by the Infectious Diseases Society of America (IDSA) in 2024. Ryan was the first author for 3 abstract articles published in Open Forum Infectious Diseases and co-authored 9 abstract articles. Ryan is one of five pharmacists in the state of Michigan who is a Board Certified Pharmacotherapy Specialist, with Added Qualifications in Infectious Diseases (2012 to present). He is a Board Certified Infectious Diseases Pharmacist (2018 to present) and an American Academy of HIV Medicine HIV Pharmacist (2017 to present). In 2024, Ryan became a Fellow of IDSA.
