Dr. Fulcher is an Associate Professor in the Department of Medicine, Division of Infectious Diseases at UCLA. She completed her MD-PhD degrees through the Medical Scientist Training Program (MSTP), then completed Internal Medicine residency and Infectious Disease fellowship training at UCLA. Her postdoctoral research training focused on mucosal immunology in HIV which led to an interest in the gut microbiome. Her current research focuses on the effects of HIV and substance use on the gut and oral microbiomes. She has led studies identifying microbiome changes in persons living with HIV who use drugs, mucosal inflammatory effects of methamphetamine use, and specific microbiome changes that may contribute to HIV acquisition risk. Her lab has ongoing projects investigating how the oral microbiome contributes to inflammation and gut dysbiosis in people with HIV, how bile acids may affect inflammation in HIV, and mechanisms of inflammation in people with HIV who use methamphetamine. Dr. Fulcher is also a long-standing co-investigator on the mSTUDY, a NIDA-funded cohort study of sexual minority men with and without HIV who use drugs based in Los Angeles. Dr. Fulcher is an attending physician in Infectious Diseases both at UCLA and the VA Greater Los Angeles Healthcare System.
