Dr. Epson is Medical Director and Assistant Chief of the Healthcare-Associated Infections (HAI) Program at the California Department of Health. She is clinically trained and board certified in internal medicine and infectious disease, and completed medical epidemiology training as an Epidemic Intelligence Service Officer with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). In her role with the CDPH HAI Program, Dr. Epson is principally responsible for overseeing antimicrobial resistance (AR) prevention and response activities, which include multiple statewide and regional initiatives to improve antimicrobial prescribing through stewardship, prevent infections and transmission of antimicrobial resistant pathogens, and track antimicrobial use and resistance trends in California healthcare settings. Dr. Epson also provides consultation and epidemiologic assistance to local public health agencies regarding HAI/AR outbreaks and breaches in infection control.
