Thomas Holowka is an Infectious Diseases Fellow at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill currently performing research on intestinal colonization with multidrug-resistant bacteria in susceptible hosts. Prior to his clinical training, Dr. Holowka earned a PhD at Yale University exploring how parasitic pathogens including Leishmania and Plasmodium can manipulate the host immune response. This work
inspired his decision to pursue a career as an Infectious Diseases Physician-Scientist. He attended medical school at Stony Brook University and completed Internal Medicine residency at Yale University. While completing his medical training Dr. Holowka continued to pursue research including exploration of the basic pathogenesis of Candida auris and clinical investigations of host risk factors for carbapenem-resistant Enterobacterales and invasive fungal infections
Dr. Holowka completed his clinical training in Infectious Diseases and earned board certification in 2023. His clinical experience has influenced his decision to focus his research on pathogenic bacteria that colonize the intestinal tract and cause diseases in susceptible hosts. He is currently pursuing basic and translational research aimed at disrupting intestinal colonization and transmission of these deadly pathogens.
