Yussef Bennani, MD, MPH, FACP, Associate Professor of Medicine, Department of Internal Medicine, Division of Infectious Diseases, Virginia Commonwealth University, Richmond, VA. Dr. Bennani joined the infectious disease faculty at VCU after spending the early part of his career with Louisiana State University in New Orleans. His primary area of interest is the intersection of HIV and co-morbid chronic disease including renal and cardiovascular disease, as well as malignancy. He is also interested in the management and public health aspects of the hepatitis C epidemic, particularly in relation to ongoing IV drug use. In addition to his teaching and patient care duties, he has been active in clinical trials for new HIV therapeutics and in curriculum development for medical trainees. Prior to his career in medicine, Dr. Bennani worked as an epidemiologist with the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, with an emphasis on the epidemiology of incident HIV infections, transmission of resistant strains of HIV, and work to better characterize the HIV epidemic in persons with infrequent healthcare contact.
