Dr. Mathad is an Associate Professor of Medicine and Obstetrics & Gynecology in the the Center for Global Health at Weill Cornell Medical College.
Her research focuses on the immune and metabolic changes of pregnancy and their impact on the pathogenesis of infectious diseases. Since 2010, she has been conducting research on the the immune changes of pregnancy and how they affect the development of tuberculosis (TB) in TB-endemic countries such as India, South Africa and Haiti. Her K23 award focused on identifying behavioral and immunologic risk factors that predict which women are at highest risk of developing active TB postpartum. She was also recently awarded an R01 to study the intersection of HIV, gestational diabetes and TB in India. She is an investigator in the International Maternal, Pediatric, and Adolescent AIDS Clinical Trials network (IMPAACT), where she chaired the first study of the safety, tolerability and pharmacokinetics of the 3-month weekly regimen of isoniazid and rifapentine for the prevention of TB during pregnancy and the postpartum period (IMPAACT 2001). Dr. Mathad is also passionate about teaching and mentoring the next generation of global health researchers in the United States, India and beyond.
