Chris Polage is a pathologist and microbiologist with 16 years’ experience leading and directing academic clinical microbiology laboratories, most recently at Duke University. He is an expert in the diagnosis of non-sterile body site and healthcare-associated infections where colonization, contamination, and foreign body devices confound a simple interpretation of diagnostic tests. His research played a key role in showing the pitfalls of assuming that detection of a sometimes pathogen in a population where colonization is common (i.e., C. difficile in hospitalized patients) was sufficient to diagnose disease. He is currently working as a consultant with partners interested in improving the clinical use and interpretation of microbiologic tests and diagnosis and treatment of infectious diseases.
