Dr. Morris first joined CDC in 2006 as an Epidemic Intelligence Service (EIS) Officer with the International Emergency and Refugee Health Branch, an assignment that led to work with displaced/affected populations in Kenya, Nepal, Vietnam, Azerbaijan, Thailand, and Swaziland. In 2008, Dr. Morris joined the Outbreak Investigations Team within the Division of TB Elimination, where she was involved in numerous outbreak responses as well as operational research, with a particular focus on multidrug resistant TB as well as TB among vulnerable populations (e.g., persons experiencing homelessness, residents of the U.S. affiliated Pacific Islands). From 2016-2021, Dr. Morris served as Team Lead for the Medical Consultation Team within the Division of Tuberculosis Elimination. More recently, Dr. Morris served as CDC’s COVID-19 Clinical Disease and Health Systems Team Lead for approximately 18 months during the COVID-19 response. In that role, Dr. Morris led efforts to define and understand Multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children and adults, proposed and conducted studies to evaluate for Covid reinfection, and established the first unit dedicated to looking at post-Covid conditions.
Dr. Morris completed her residency in internal medicine at Case Western’s MetroHealth Medical Center, a fellowship in infectious diseases at The Cleveland Clinic, and a Physician’s Executive MBA focusing on health care policy and management. With a background in social work before attending medical school, Dr. Morris has a passion for addressing the health care needs of those experiencing homelessness and has volunteered extensively with homeless service providers over the last twenty years. Dr. Morris has also remained clinically active, seeing patients in TB clinics, primary health clinics for the underserved, and hospitalized patients for infectious disease related problems.
Dr. Morris is currently serving as the Clinical Branch Chief / Associate Director of Programs for CDC-Namibia. Namibia is a particularly special place for Dr. Morris. She participated in a program that sponsored U.S. students to study at the University of Namibia in 1994. As part of the program, Dr. Morris traveled throughout Namibia, learning from people living within each region during Namibia’s early years of independence. Dr. Morris lives with her family [spouse, Daniel, and three children Abigail (16), Arya (9), and Ryker (8)] in Windhoek, Namibia.
