Andrej Spec, MD, MSCI (he/him/his)

Andrej Spec earned his MD at the University of Illinois in Chicago and did his internal medicine training at Rush University Medical Center. He came to Washington University in St Louis for his fellowship and concomitantly earned his Master of Science in Clinical Investigation. He stayed on as faculty, where he focused his research and clinical work on invasive fungal infections. He is currently an Associate Professor at Washington University in St Louis, where he also serves as the Section Chief of Transplant Infectious Disease and the Medical Co-Director of the Invasive Mycoses Clinic. He has authored over 80 scientific papers and several book chapters on the topic of infectious disease, focusing on invasive fungal infections. He also serves as the Deputy Editor for Open Forum Infectious Disease. In 2023, he cofounded MYCology Advocacy, Research, and Education (MYCARE), a patient-centered advocacy organization designed to give voice to patients suffering from fungal infections, with Robert Purdie, a survivor of coccidioidal meningitis. He is the developer and lead editor of the Comprehensive Review of Infectious Disease, a bestselling Infectious Disease textbook focused on teaching ID and preparing readers for ID boards.
