Imelda Balboni, MD, PhD
Dr. Balboni is a Clinical Associate Professor in the Division of Pediatric Allergy, Immunology and Rheumatology at Stanford University. She graduated from the Medical Scientist Training Program at the University Of Connecticut School Of Medicine in 1999. She completed her residency in pediatrics at Children’s Hospital of Orange County and her fellowship in pediatric rheumatology at Stanford University. Since completing fellowship in 2005, she has remained at Stanford University and serves as an attending physician at Stanford Medicine Children’s Health and Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital Stanford, caring for pediatric rheumatology patients and mentoring trainees in pediatrics and pediatric rheumatology. She is the Program Director for the Pediatric Rheumatology Fellowship at Stanford and the Associate Program Director for Stanford’s NIH T32 Training Program in Adult and Pediatric Rheumatology.
During her fellowship training and early career, Dr. Balboni carried out translational research in the laboratory, utilizing autoantigen microarrays to identify biomarkers in pediatric systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and other autoimmune diseases. She continues to participate in clinical and translational research within the field of pediatric rheumatology through collaborative research efforts at Stanford University and other institutions. She is an active member of the Childhood Arthritis and Rheumatology Research Alliance (CARRA) SLE Committee’s Lupus Nephritis and CLUTCH (Lupus Genetics) Workgroups, and is site PI at Stanford for a Lupus Research Alliance Global Team Science Award evaluating the genetic and immunologic determinants of childhood lupus nephritis.
