Laura E. Riley, MD, is Obstetrician and Gynecologist-in-Chief at NewYork-Presbyterian/ Weill Cornell Medical Center and Given Foundation Professor and Chair of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Weill Cornell Medicine. Dr. Riley leads the Alexandra Cohen Hospital for Women and Newborns, and the obstetrics and gynecology enterprise at NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center including NewYork- Presbyterian Lower Manhattan Hospital, NewYork-Presbyterian Brooklyn Methodist Hospital, and NewYork-Presbyterian Queens.
A maternal-fetal medicine specialist and internationally recognized expert on obstetric infectious diseases, she works with the CDC, and the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) to develop practice guidelines around diagnosis and management of infectious diseases in obstetrics. As Chair of ACOG’s Immunization, Infectious Disease, and Public Health Preparedness Expert Workgroup, Dr. Riley has represented the unique needs of pregnant individuals through several epidemics (H1N1, zika, Ebola, COVID). She was the first Ob/GYN voting member for ACIP from 2014-2017 and continues her advocacy around vaccination of pregnant individuals. She served on the ACIP Vaccine Safety Technical Subgroup on COVID-19 vaccines and remains an active member of ACIP’s COVID vaccine workgroup. Dr. Riley has authored numerous peer-reviewed articles, and reviews on obstetric infectious disease.
She is the past president of the Society for Maternal Fetal Medicine and received the Lifetime Achievement Award from that Society. Dr. Riley is on the editorial boards of Contemporary OB/GYN and NEJM and a member of the NICHD’s Board of Scientific Counselors.
Dr. Riley received her Bachelor of Arts degree in biology from Harvard University and her medical degree from the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. Dr. Riley remained at the University of Pittsburgh for her residency in obstetrics and gynecology before completing a fellowship in maternal fetal medicine at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston and a fellowship in infectious disease at Boston University Medical Center.
