Dr. Alexander Yu serves as Chief of the Surveillance Section in the Division of Communicable Disease Control at the California Department of Public Health (CDPH). As part of California’s COVID-19 pandemic response, Dr. Yu co-led establishment of CDPH’s Wastewater Surveillance program, now a Center of Excellence for the CDC's National Wastewater Surveillance System. During the pandemic, Dr. Yu also led outbreak investigations, supported nursing home preparedness, and helped develop public health guidance. He has also worked on the mpox response and recently led CDPH's epidemiology and surveillance branch for H5N1 preparedness and response.
Dr. Yu provides clinical care at San Mateo County Medical Center and holds an adjunct faculty appointment at Stanford University. He completed Infectious Diseases fellowship training at Stanford University, Internal Medicine residency at Massachusetts General Hospital, and obtained his Medical Degree from Texas Tech Health Sciences Center, and Masters in Public Health at Harvard University.
