Associate Chief of Education and Telemedicine

Dr. Rima Abdel-Massih is an Associate Professor of Medicine and Associate Chief of Education and Telemedicine in the Division of Infectious Diseases at the University of Pittsburgh and University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC). She joined the transplant Infectious Diseases (ID) group in 2009 after completing a transplant ID fellowship at Mayo Clinic. She became the Associate Director of the ID fellowship at UPMC in 2013 and its Program Director from 2016 till 2023. Dr. Abdel-Massih is a national leader in remote ID care delivery with over a decade experience in instituting customized models of telemedicine services in ID. She became the Director of Tele-ID Services at UPMC in 2016 and led its growth regionally. The success of the program under her leadership with data proven improved outcomes on patient care, led her to co-found Infectious Disease Connect (ID Connect), a Tele-ID services specialized company. As Chief Executive Officer and President of ID Connect, Dr. Abdel Massih spearheaded the creation of remote, academic positions focused on delivering high quality care and promoting work-life balance. Today, she leads the largest academically-based Tele-ID specialty service in the US. Her current research interests focus on studying outcomes of various models of care delivery via telemedicine. Dr. Abdel-Massih is an advocate for ID physicians and trainees; she continues to mentor a large group of physicians and serves as a member of the IDSA Compensation Task Force Committee.
