Anson Kwame Wurapa, MD, is an attending physician with Metro Infectious Disease Consultants, Decatur, Georgia and is affiliated with Emory Healthcare, Dekalb Operating Unit. He also serves as an adjunct professor at Morehouse Medical School in Atlanta, Georgia.
Dr. Wurapa completed his undergraduate degree in biology from D’Youville University, Buffalo, NY and attended medical school at Upstate Medical University (formally State University of New York, Upstate) in Syracuse, NY. He completed his residency in Internal Medicine at Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland, Ohio, where his rotations on the HIV unit exposed him to the challenges presented by immunosuppressed patients during the ongoing AIDS epidemic. This experience raised his interest in the care and management of their often-complicated problems, spurring him on to a fellowship in Infectious Diseases at the University of Rochester, Strong Memorial Hospital, Rochester, NY. During his fellowship, he also completed the Nicholas A. Rango HIV Clinical Scholars Program offered by the New York State Department of Health AIDS Institute designed to provide further in-depth training in HIV management. Since completing medical training in 2001, Dr. Wurapa began work in private practice in Atlanta, Georgia. The Southeastern US quickly became the epicenter of new HIV cases in the US particularly in the Black population, and has become a major part of his outpatient and inpatient practice. To provide cutting-edge care to his patients, Dr. Wurapa has actively participated in pharmaceutical industry clinical trials, enabling patients access to studies to receive medication regardless of their health insurance status. In addition to his outpatient clinic, Dr. Wurapa has continued to provide infectious disease consultations at Emory Hillandale, Emory Decatur and Emory LTAC hospitals in Atlanta.
