Usha Stiefel, M.D., is an Associate Professor of Medicine at Case Western Reserve University and the Chief of the Infectious Diseases Section for the VA Northeast Ohio Healthcare System (VANEOHS). Dr. Stiefel's academic and research interests lie in the fields of antimicrobial resistance, hospital-acquired infections, antimicrobial stewardship, and infection prevention. Her work has been funded in the past by the Department of Veterans Affairs, the MAD-ID Foundation, and many industry partners . Dr. Stiefel leads the IDSA-designated Antimicrobial Stewardship Center of Excellence (CoE) at the VA Northeast Ohio, which was the first VA in the country to receive this designation. Dr. Stiefel has served the IDSA in many roles, including as an abstract reviewer since 2017, as an invited speaker and moderator at meetings, as a member of the Antimicrobial Resistance Committee, and as a current member of the Leadership Institute Working Group. She was elected a Fellow of the IDSA in 2019.
Outside the field of infectious diseases, Dr. Stiefel has been engaged with academic faculty development, particularly for women faculty, throughout her career. She has served as the President of the Women Faculty of Medicine and the Vice-Dean for Faculty Development and Diversity at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine in the past. Currently, she serves as the Vice-Chair for Faculty Development and Diversity for the University Hospitals and VANEOHS Department of Medicine, as well as the Chair of the Faculty Senate Committee on Women.
