Dr. Spivak completed her medical degree at University of Virginia, internal medicine residency and infectious diseases fellowship at the Johns Hopkins Hospital where she also served as Assistant Chief of Service on the Osler Medical Service. She completed a Master’s in Health Sciences in Clinical Investigation at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. She joined the faculty at University of Utah School of Medicine in 2011 where she is a Professor of Medicine in the Division of Infectious Diseases.
She established and serves as Medical Director of the Antimicrobial Stewardship Programs at University of Utah Health and the Salt Lake City Veterans Affairs Healthcare System, both nationally recognized for excellence. Dr. Spivak's research interests have focused on understanding drivers of antimicrobial use, and development and evaluation of methods to improve antimicrobial use. She has led comparative effectiveness research focused on evaluating patient outcomes related to various antibiotic use strategies to inform antimicrobial stewardship interventions and clinical practice. She is a Fellow of the Infectious Diseases Society of America (IDSA) and a Fellow of SHEA, past Chair of the IDSA Antimicrobial Resistance Committee and a former member of the Board of Scientific Counselors to the Office of Infectious Diseases at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. After working in antimicrobial stewardship for over a decade, Dr. Spivak became interested in the intersection of climate change and healthcare, specifically focusing on waste associated with unnecessary antibiotic use.
