Patient Advocate
Celina Medina's journey started at the age of 18 months, when she was diagnosed with nephrotic syndrome. She spent her childhood and early adult life in and out of hospitals with declining kidney function until she progressed to requiring hemo- and peritoneal- dialysis. She received her first gift of life from her brother at the age of twenty-six. Due to rejection of her transplant, she had to reinitiate peritoneal dialysis. During that transition, she required a CVC and developed a severe catheter related blood stream infection (CRBSI), against which her initial antibiotics were not effective. Thankfully, there were alternative antibiotics available to treat her infection and she was able to move on to peritoneal dialysis for twelve years until she was able to receive a second transplant. She now focuses on advocacy work and improving care of patients with kidney disease.
