I have been fortunate to have had inspirational mentors in the fields of Clinical Microbiology, Infectious Diseases, and Pathology.
• Gary Doern , Pat Murray , Marie Landry, and Bill Gardner at UMass, Wash U, Yale and University of South Alabama, respectively
And now in diagnostics, with my colleagues in Barcelona at deepull.
• My first academic position after fellowship in 1992, was at the University of South Alabama (USA) in Mobile, Alabama, for 7 years during the height of AIDS. In 1992, I got to oversee all the areas of microbiology/ID testing which included my new division - Molecular diagnostics.
• I returned home to New England, to Lahey Clinic, and then for 17 years was at Lifespan Hospitals in RI and Brown Medical School, where I still retain an appointment as Professor in Pathology.
• My passions are:
o molecular diagnostics and clarifying their clinical utility
o And Mentoring - where I attempt to pass on my enthusiasm for this wonderful field of medicine.
• Lots of papers, grants, clinical trials and committees, awards, etc.
• I love my 3 boys, you may have seen them on a slide or two during my lectures (usually STIs) and burning off all my excess energy in sports.
