Joel A. Kammeyer, MD, MPH, is an Associate Professor in the Department of Internal Medicine at the University of Toledo College of Medicine and Life Sciences (UTCOMLS). He completed his undergraduate studies at Miami University (Ohio), earned his MD from The Ohio State University College of Medicine, and concurrently received an MPH from the Harvard School of Public Health. He completed his residency at Case Western Reserve University - MetroHealth Medical Center, serving as Chief Resident, followed by fellowship training in infectious diseases at the University of North Carolina.
Dr. Kammeyer’s scholarly activities focus on optimizing care models in infectious diseases, demonstrating the value of infectious diseases physicians, and global health education. During the COVID-19 pandemic, he facilitated the expansion of clinical services to eight regional hospitals in northwest Ohio and southeast Michigan, developing the largest synchronous inpatient telemedicine service in Ohio. Since November 2022, he has led the outpatient parenteral antibiotic therapy program at UTCOMLS and ProMedica Health System. He has spearheaded a comprehensive restructuring of educational initiatives, creating new curricula for the ID clerkship, Internal Medicine residency, and ID fellowship programs. He is avidly involved in mentoring students and residents and explores the role of advanced practice providers in infectious diseases. As Chair of the Global Health Committee and Associate Director of Global Health Programs at UTCOMLS, Dr. Kammeyer directs the “Introduction to Global Health and Human Rights” elective course and leads the Designation of Excellence in Global Health program.
Dr. Kammeyer is the Immediate Past President of the Infectious Diseases Society of Ohio and has held leadership roles in the American College of Physicians - Ohio Chapter. He has served on working groups within the Infectious Diseases Society of America and committees within the Consortium of Universities for Global Health. He has received multiple teaching awards, including the Department of Internal Medicine Excellence in Teaching Award, the UTCOMLS Excellence in Advising and Mentorship Award in 2022, and recognition as a “Healthcare Hero” by the ACP-Ohio Chapter for his leadership during the COVID-19 pandemic.
